What are the secrets behind the design of a Formula 1 race car? How can we use scientific knowledge to shatter speed records? These and many other questions will be answered by Centaurus Racing Team, of the University of Thessaly, which is coming to the Thessaly Science Festival for three days at high speeds!
At the Festival’s interactive exhibition, which will open its doors in the “Mill of Pappas” from the 11th to 13th of October, visitors of all ages will have the opportunity to meet the top-class formula race car built by the undergraduate students of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Thessaly, for their participation to the world’s biggest competition for engineering students, Formula Student!
How do you combine scientific knowledge with the passion for racing?
The team’s passion for the field of study led them to apply their knowledge outside the narrow scope of the academic curriculum, traveling from the classroom to the race-tracks of enterpreneurship, marketing and innovation! The team utilize their solid background on material and fluid mechanics and simulation software to build and optimize a fully functional race-car. It’s these secrets of high speeds which will they explain to us, introducing us to Thireus R, their latest improved Formula 1 model, bound to wow the crowd!
From the University of Thessaly to the racing tracks
Centaurus Racing Team is made up of undergraduate students of the Mechanical Engineering Department of the University of Thessaly. The team was created in 2009, with an aim to study, design and build fully functional Formula 1- type race cars. Their ultimate goal is to participate (and make a splash!) in the international competition Formula Student, among the world’s biggest universities. The team’s building history includes three race car models and two improved versions, Chiron, Nessus, Nessus R, Thireus and its improved model, Thireus R. During this season, the team will be focusing on building their new model, Amphion, preparing for the Formula Student competition in the summer of 2019.
Don’t miss the opportunity to meet Thireus and Amphion up close and uncover the secrets of speed-racing in the interactive exhibition of the first Thessaly Science Festival!
